Poetry Tuesday: "I Dropped My Heart"
I dropped my heart into the bottom of a well.
I heard the echoing silence as it fell
And fell and fell.
And finally, a sickening splash
Ringing off stones back up to where I stood,
Head peering over into the darkness,
Imagining I could see the outline of a dark silhouette
Lost in shadows and ripples.
As I straightened I felt lighter,
Which I suppose is natural when you’ve suddenly relinquished yourself of an organ.
No more pulse to hammer through my wrists,
Only a slight tremor in the water so far below
As my heart beat away at the bottom of a well.
